MATCH OF THE ROUND: GMBC pounds UMBC in A-Grade statement

Last Saturday, A-grade teams Greenhills Montmorency and Melbourne University went head-to-head at Ross Straw Field, where GMBC snatched an away game win with a score of 14-3.

GMBC started strongly with 10 runs in the first inning, taking a solid lead that Uni were ultimately unable to overcome.

GMBC Head Coach Wade McConnon said his team was ready to pounce.

“It was a pretty clear message that we weren’t gonna take them lightly,” he said.

McConnon nominated young-gun Bronson Neave as player of the match, after he returned three hits including a 3-run home run.

“He had some really good at bats and smoked some balls hard,” McConnon said.

The young, talented Neave explained his approach was to jump on the fastball early.

“I’ve been squaring up the ball early in the count, looking for my pitch and smashing it,” he said.

And he said he knew off the bat the home run was out of the yard.

“It always feels good,” he said.

Sitting at the top of the ladder with only a few regular season games left, McConnon revealed he’s likely to lose players over the coming weeks as some of the young GMBC hot-shots head off to college in the US.

“We’ll lose a few guys in the next few rounds, so we’re looking at some of the twos guys to come up, and have an impact,” he said.

It was a dominant win by GMBC to solidify their spot on top of the A-grade ladder leading into finals.
