North Balwyn v Ringwood
RINGWOOD have continued on their dream run, defeating league leaders North Balwyn 8 to 5 in the second week of the A grade Melbourne Winter Baseball league finals to progress through to the grand final against Greenhills Montmorency next week and end North Balwyn’s outstanding season.
Ringwood coach Adam Bright said it had been a phenomenal turn around in form, with the club facing relegation to B grade at one stage earlier in the season.
Ringwood defeated Watsonia last week in week one of the finals and Bright said they went in to Saturday’s match against North Balwyn feeling optimistic about their chances of an upset.
“It was unbelievable. Just to even get in to the finals to be playing off,” he said.
Bright said Wes de Jong was in fine form on the mound, having only given up one run until the seventh innings.
“He then gave up a couple in the seventh and Luke Papanicolou came in and shut the door in the last two innings,” Bright said.
Bright said Mitch Wilhite was the stand out with the bat on the day, hitting a two run home run.
Bright was also able to take the field and will be fit to play in next week’s grand final against GMBC. Earlier in the day h
“From where we were, it’s just awesome to have turned things around. GMBC will be tough to beat next week but then we said the same about North Balwyn today.”
North Balwyn coach Neil Burke, who was overseas for the match, said while they had a great season, they didn’t bring their “A game” to the finals.
“When you run into hot teams at this time of year you have to be at your best. Congrats to both GMBC and Ringwood and I’m sure they will produce a great grand final,” he said.
Ringwood will take on GMBC at La Trobe University next Saturday at 1.30pm.
