NORTH Balwyn have opened their Melbourne Winter Baseball season with a home game win over Heathmont.
Coach Phil Dale said he was pleased with the 4 to 0 win and that it was a great way to get things underway.
He said Kellie Zeblan was great behind the mound as well as Mitch Kennedy, Cameron Gibbens and Jeremy Young who all contributed to pitching duties.
He said Chris Burke and Mitch Kennedy were the best with the bat.
“It was a great way to start. I’m pretty happy. It will be another tough one against Waverley next week,” he said.
Heathmont coach Matt Gourlay said he wasn’t disappointed with the round one loss, as there were good signs there for the games ahead.
“Their pitching was fantastic today though and they had good at bats. We just left ourselves defensively a bit short,” he said.
“It’s round one, so it’s early. I’m not disappointed. We can play and improve. We were missing five players from our lineup today. That said I expected the players out there to perform.”
He said Kyle von Ruden and Andrew Campbell were the better players on the day but that North Balwyn were too good, and capitalised on their errors.
“I still think it is going to be another really tight season though,” Gourlay said.
North Balwyn travel to Waverley next week and Heathmont are home against Greenhills Montmorency.
