Watsonia and Essendon celebrate the memory of Chris Lane

Round 1 of the MWBL Season saw Watsonia and Essendon come together to celebrate the memory of Chris Lane, in the first annual Chris Lane Shield game.

To start off the day, Chris’ father Peter Lane threw out the first pitch, before the two teams went to battle.

The game was played in good spirits, with Watsonia taking the shield, following a walk-off double to coach Adam Burton, finishing the game 4-3.

The following report was posted of Watsonia’s facebook page:

The Chris Lane Shield game 2017

On opening day of the 2017 winter season we were entertained by a fabulous game of baseball at Loyola Reserve.

After Essendon knocked in the first couple of runs, Watsonia got the score back to 2-1. All tied up at 3-3 going into the last innings, with 2 out and a runner on, Watsonia Club Coach Adam Burton delivered and crashed a walk-off double to give the Saints a 4-3 victory and claim the honours of the first Chris Land Shield.

For a fantastic game, Burto was awarded the Chris Lane Medal.
