North Balwyn win at home

NORTH Balwyn have knocked Heathmont from top spot with a gutsy 7-4 in round 13 of the Melbourne Winter Baseball League A grade competition.

North Balwyn were quick to get away to a strong lead and at one point, were up 7-0. But the big hitting Heathmont side were able to fight their way back in to the match, played in ideal conditions at Myrtle Park in North Balwyn.

North Balwyn coach Phil Dale said it was an important win for the club, who were keen to bounce back after a shock loss to bottom placed Knox last week.

“It was a good win. Tyler Dale was outstanding with five innings of shutout ball and Jackson Brett caught a good game,” Dale said.

North Balwyn will face another big hitting side next week when they travel to take on Greenhills Montmorency Baseball Club next week.

Heathmont coach Matt Gourlay said despite the loss, he was still confident his team would do well when it counted.

“It was disappointing to go down today but we managed to fight back and we showed character,” he said.

“I think we pitched better than the score line showed today but I have to give full credit to their pitchers today,” Gourlay said.

Heathmont take on bottom placed Knox next week, but he said he wouldn’t be taking the game easy, saying all teams could be strong competition on their day.

“We’ve learnt from our losses this year and you have to have a few losses to go all the way.”
