Research atone for early season loss by taking the points against Heathmont

By SALLY HEPPLESTON

IN A battle of the pitchers, Research emerged 5 to 1 victors over top placed Heathmont in round 11 of the Melbourne Winter Baseball League A grade competition.

Played in true winter baseball conditions at Glenauburn Park, Research coach Tom Dicker said there wasn’t an “earned run” all day.

He said returning multiple league MVP pitcher Leigh McKay, who has been out with an injury since the two clubs last met, was outstanding.

Dicker said Kyle Bedford then closed them game out well.
He said their five runs for the game all came in the one inning.

“We really got the hits when we needed them,” Dicker said.

“Today was a real team effort. One thing we have is depth. In 11 games we’ve had 11 different line-ups. But we’re still amongst it and looking good with Leigh back now,” Dicker said.

He said they faced a “massive challenge” next week against Greenhills Montmorency, with both clubs looking to book a spot in the finals.

Heathmont coach Matt Gourlay also praised both pitchers.

He said despite the loss, he still had lots of confidence in his team.

“When everything clicks for us, I still think we’re very hard to beat,” he said.

Heathmont are home to Watsonia next week.
