Penguins win after mid season stumble

Heathmont back on winners list with a strong performance against Watsonia

HEATHMONT have reclaimed top spot after a solid 7-3 win against fourth placed Watsonia in round 12 of the Melbourne Winter Baseball League A Grade competition.

The big hitting Heathmont side, playing at home, were aided by home runs from Ben Leslie and Kane Davidson.

Coach Matt Gourlay also said their pitching was impressive in an even team performance.

“(Mat) Wilson and (Nate) Harris pitched great for us today,” Gourlay said.

Watsonia coach Adam Burton said Heathmont deserved to be the top side, as they hit “very deep in to their line up”.

“They hit one through nine and they certainly are a very good hitting side, and certainly deserve to be the favourites,” he said.

He said his side would face a tough few weeks, losing players to international duties and suspension.

Heathmont travel to North Balwyn next week, who suffered a shock lost to bottom side and previously winless Knox on the weekend.

Watsonia are home to Greenhills Montmorency, who are one above them on the ladder after a strong win over Research.

In other A Grade results, Essendon narrowly defeated Ringwood and Greensborough were too good for Forest Hill.
