THREE time reigning champions Heathmont have suffered their second loss in a row for the 2015 Melbourne Winter Baseball League.

The champions were defeated 7-2 by Greenhills and Montmorency Baseball Club who also went down last week to rivals Greensborough in the Heritage Round season opener.

GMBC coach Chris Hodkinson said it was satisfying to get a win on the board for the new season.

He said pitcher Andy Mann only gave up four hits for the day and that Daniel Fornito and Matthew Lawman scored home runs.

He said while his side was still undermanned with a couple of players out with injuries and some being rested, his side would continue to get stronger as the season went on.

New Heathmont coach John Edwards said it had been a tough start to the season, after a loss to North Balwyn last week, but that his side was also missing players who would return as the season went on.

“Some of our players had a very heavy load over the summer,” Edwards said.

“We’ve got a few guys out for the first month or so and we’ll sneak them back in as the season goes on.

He said it was initially a close game that eventually “got out of hand” with a few errors that saw GMBC pile on five runs.

Heathmont are away to Research next week in a grand final replay and GMBC are home against Knox.
