Perennial Finalists GMBC win through to A Grade Preliminary Final

GREENHILLS and Montmorency Baseball Club has put an end to North Balwyn’s impressive season with 6-4 win at Malcolm Blair Reserve on Saturday in the first week of the Melbourne Winter Baseball League A grade finals.
GMBC coach Chris Hodkinson said it was tight all day but that North Balwyn deserved a “big congrats” for their great season.
“We’ve had two good games against them in the past few weeks but our hitting was really good again today,” he said.
He said Liam Crivelli had two home runs, Slade Squire had one, Matt McQuiggan two hits and Tom Shiels three hits.
“We’re pretty confident at the moment and feel we’ve really turned a corner and we’re playing really good baseball at the right time of the year,” Hodkinson said.
North Balwyn coach Phil Dale said it was a disappointing end to a tight match.
He said his team was up for part of the match but that things didn’t go their way.
He praised Adam Burton who hit a three run home run to put them in front and Jon Kennedy who started the pitching duties before being relieved by Jeremy Young, who only gave up one run.
Dale said his team was young and could learn a lot from the season and improve next year.
GMBC will face dual reigning premiers Heathmont next week, who were beaten by second placed Research in an upset result.
“We’ve had two really good games against them this year and we’re at 1-1 so we’ll see how we go,” Hodkinson said.
