Heathmont BC overcame a very vocal GMBC to win through to the 2014 Grand Final

HEATHMONT will be looking to make it three premierships in a row after putting an end to Greenhills Montmorency’s impressive season with a 13-8 win in the A Grade preliminary final of the Melbourne Winter Baseball League on Saturday.
Played at La Trobe University’s diamond in perfect spring conditions, Heathmont coach Matt Gourlay said it was a game of outstanding quality, where it was disappointing there had to be a loser.
Gourlay said GMBC came out “all guns blazing” and got on top of their pitcher Ryan Bean early. He said Josh Silvi then came on to finish pitching duties for the match and was outstanding.
Gourlay praised both sides though, and said with the top three teams in the competition, including Research who are awaiting Heathmont in the grand final, it was really a “toss of a coin”.
Ross Hunter and Brad Harman both scored home runs for Heathmont in the win.
Heathmont defeated Research 10-0 in the grand final two years ago, but Gourlay said it was likely to be a much tougher match this year.
“It’s exciting. It’s a massive hurdle but we came out with a different intensity today and if we come out with that same intensity again next week, we’re a good chance,” he said.
GMBC coach Chris Hodkinson was unavailable for comment after the match.
